The aftermath of two recent storms; storm Ciara and storm Dennis - and with groundwater levels being above normal for this time of year - the meadows once again flooded due to the quality of rainfall in the recent weeks.
The Mill Brook, a small offshoot of the River Wey as it enters the meadows, became as big as the main river itself. However only being a brook consequently overflowed it's banks; first flooding the western end of the meadows and then all the meadows until eventually returning back some of the water back to the River Wey. The meadow itself created a third current into the water running off the fields, creating a confluence of three water sources but reducing the flow in the river as the meadow acted as a short term reservoir.
Further along, although the river alongside Gostrey meadow rose considerably, it did not overflow it’s flood banks. The meadows provide a critical floodplain to protect the surrounding houses and businesses.
